Stain
Wood staining starts with getting the surface ready.
We clean, sand and prepare wood before applying the new stain or sealant. Existing coatings may need to be stripped first depending on their condition and the finish being applied.
What's included
Stain works with the wood rather than simply covering it, which makes preparation especially important. We evaluate the existing finish and condition of the wood before deciding how much cleaning, sanding or stripping is required.
- Wood cleaning — removing surface dirt and buildup before refinishing
- Sanding and prep — preparing exposed wood for an even application
- Old stain removal — stripping existing finish when required
- Stain application — semi-transparent or solid depending on the project
- Wood sealing — sealant application when included in the selected finish system
Questions
Stain FAQ.
Not always. It depends on the condition and type of the existing finish and what will be applied over it. Peeling, failing or incompatible coatings may need to be stripped or sanded before the new stain is applied.
Semi-transparent stain allows more of the natural wood grain and variation to remain visible. Solid stain provides more color coverage while retaining the character and texture of the wood surface. The right option depends on the existing wood and the desired appearance.
Yes. Wood doors, trim, gates, fences, decks, pergolas and outdoor furniture can all be candidates for staining. We first inspect the existing wood and finish to determine the preparation required.
There is no single schedule for every surface. Sun exposure, moisture, traffic, wood species, previous coatings and the stain system all affect how the finish wears. We look at the condition of the existing finish rather than assuming a fixed maintenance interval.
